I used to think my ego— the loyal bodyguard that’s protected me all these years— had to die before I could be happy, before I could release control, before I could stop judging myself and others, and finally enjoy life. That’s what I thought. That’s what I’d been taught. Then one day, my mentor said, “You’ve misunderstood. The ego isn’t meant to die— only to soften, to relax, so your sacred heart can lead.” “The heart is our operating system, our lifeline to the Divine Spirit who guides us toward our best life.” And so, in meditation one morning, Heart and Ego had a conversation. Here’s what they said: You’ve worked hard, Ego. You’ve protected me all these years, and I appreciate all your efforts. That’s true. I’ve been on high alert 24/7. I built the résumé, dodged the chaos and criticism, kept you safe through every storm. Without me, we wouldn’t have made it. I know. And I thank you. You’ve done exactly what you were meant to do: protect. But now, it’s time to loosen your grip. Loosen my grip? If I let go, who’s going to steer our life? I will. I’ve been here all along— quiet, steady, listening for the Divine Voice. Not the loud one, but the Whisper that speaks through stillness. So… you want me to step aside? Not step aside. Just rest. You’re not being fired. You’re being invited to trust. That sounds… unfamiliar. Risky. It is. But unfamiliar doesn’t mean unsafe. Let’s try something new. Let grace carry us. Let unconditional love and wisdom be our guide. And what if it feels weird? What if I don’t know how to let go? Then we’ll laugh. We’ll breathe. We’ll trust. When the heart leads, the mind quiets. Fear fades. And the Spirit within us begins to sing again. So… I just sit? Yes. You sit. In the silence. By the window. Watch the beauty. Let love lead. Let Divine Breath flow in and through us. And now, together, with one breath, let’s proclaim: This life is enough. I am enough. We are enough— just the way we are. Rest, Ego. Just rest. —brian j plachta |
