Unveiling Your Soul’s Journey

I was drawn to the boy’s adventures—swinging from the tree’s branches, gathering her apples, and basking in her shade. It spoke to a carefree, imaginative part of me that believed the world was full of endless possibilities.

The book felt like an invitation to play and dream without limits. The tree was like a trusted friend, always there to offer her gifts, much like the maple tree shading my backyard.

In The Giving Tree, the relationship between the boy and the tree reflects the spiritual stages of adulthood.

When viewed through the lens of the Cowboy, the Seed Bearer, and the Wise Sage, the story reveals the tree as more than just a part of nature.

It becomes a symbol of God—steadfast, loving, and present through every stage and season of our lives.

The Cowboy-Cowgirl Spirit: The Adventurer

As a young boy, the child embodies the Cowboy Spirit—a phase of life filled with freedom, adventure, and unbridled energy. He swings from the tree’s branches, eats her apples, and rests in her shade. Like a cowboy seeking to conquer the world, he’s driven by the thrill of peak experiences.

During our early experiences with the Divine, we often view God as a provider of blessings and opportunities.

The tree’s gifts—her fruit, her shade, her branches—are received with delight but with little gratitude or awareness of their cost.

While this phase of youthful exuberance is important for growth, it can leave us blind to the deeper connection God offers us.

The Seed Bearer Spirit: The Builder

As the boy grows older, he transitions into the Seed Bearer Spirit—a time of responsibility, creation, and building.

No longer a carefree child, he returns to the tree not to play but to ask for wood to build a house, for apples to sell for wealth.

His focus has shifted from playing to planting his own seeds—constructing a home, a career, and a life.

The tree gives willingly, sacrificing herself piece by piece so the boy can fulfill his dreams.

At this stage in our spiritual lives, we come to see God as a helper, supporting us as we work to create the life we desire.

Yet, like the boy, we often become so consumed by our striving, we neglect the deeper relationship God offers us.

The tree continues to give, yet the boy rarely pauses to simply be with her.

He’s too busy building his life to rest with the tree and seek her deeper wisdom and guidance. 

Wise Sage Spirit: The Wisdom Seeker

In old age, the boy returns a final time.

He has taken everything from the tree—her apples, branches, and trunk—leaving only a stump.

This time, he no longer seeks material gifts. He asks only for a place to rest.

In this stage, the boy embodies the Contemplative Sage Spirit. His striving has ended.

He now perceives the tree not for what she can give but for who she is—a steadfast, unchanging presence that has accompanied him through every season of his life.

The tree becomes a symbol of God’s unconditional love, a love that has always been there, even when ignored, resisted, or misunderstood.

As contemplative sages, we are invited to rest in this love and enter the quiet.

We begin to recognize that life’s deepest nourishment doesn’t come from doing or achieving but from simply being in God’s presence.

In stillness, we let go of the need to take or strive, creating space to encounter the Eternal One who has been with us all along.

Through practices like daily meditation, we learn to dwell in this sacred silence, letting God’s presence restore our souls. 

In the quiet, we find peace. We tap into the wellspring of divine wisdom—a source of inspiration that helps us integrate life’s lessons.

Meditation becomes a place of communion, where the world’s noise fades and we hear the gentle whispers of God’s voice guiding us toward rest, healing, and wholeness.

The boy and the tree reflect the journey of the soul—a journey toward union with the Divine.

As wisdom seekers, we discover God’s steadfast presence is the greatest gift.

When we learn to rest in an intimate relationship with God, we find the wisdom to make sense of our journey.

We discover inner peace to navigate the ups and downs of our lives.

We receive both the desire and the ability to share with others the wisdom we have gained.

The Giving Tree

Through every stage of life—Cowboy, Seed Bearer, Sage—the tree remains constant, just as God does. She gives without condition, delights in the boy’s presence, and offers rest at the end of his journey.

Like the tree, God invites us into a relationship of unwavering love, where we are held and nourished no matter where we are on the path of life.

The Giving Tree reminds us that while our roles and needs may change, God does not.

Whether we’re swinging from branches in youthful exuberance, taking wood to build our dreams, or resting on the stump in quiet meditation, God is always present, offering love and grace.

The story invites us to go deeper.

Instead of waiting until we reach a specific stage of life, we can intentionally engage all parts of our journey—and our relationship with God—at any age.

In moments of adventure, we can pause to thank God for the gifts of joy and freedom.

In seasons of building and striving, we can turn to God for guidance and renewal. 

And amid the busyness of life, we can rest, taking time to sit with God in the quiet and let God’s healing presence restore us.

Ultimately, the boy and the tree remind us of a profound truth: when we rest in God, we discover that we are—and have always been—part of something eternal.

We are invited to awaken to this truth wherever we are on the journey, embracing God’s steadfast love in every moment.

The Giving Tree enchanted many of us as children with its simplicity—a magical story of a tree that always gave and a boy who always dreamed.

Yet, it holds hidden depths and profound wisdom. It’s not merely a tale about a boy and a tree.

It’s an invitation to awaken to the presence of the Eternal One who accompanies us through every stage of life.

The story calls us to recognize and embrace the love of the eternal tree—God.

God’s love transforms us.

It brings peace in our restlessness, strength in our struggles, and meaning in our striving.

It grounds us when we feel untethered and fills us with joy and hope, no matter our circumstances.

Living in a relationship with the God of Love allows us to flourish, grow into the people we were created to be, and share our love with the world.

Through this intimate connection, we find wholeness, purpose, and the courage to live with open hearts and outstretched hands.

We become the Giving Tree.
