Using Tara Brach’s R.A.I.N. Method to Hold Our Holy LongingPsychologist and mindfulness teacher Tara Brach offers a tool called RAIN to help us navigate challenging emotions. We can adapt it to hold our yearning for God in a way that draws us closer to the Divine. 1. R—Recognize Pause and recognize the yearning. Name it: “This is my longing for God.” 2. A—Allow Allow the feeling to be present. Let it exist without judgment. Instead of pushing it away or trying to resolve it, make space for it. Whisper to yourself, “It’s okay to feel this longing.” 3. I—Investigate Gently explore the yearning. Ask, “Where do I feel this in my body? What does this longing want me to know?” Often, the yearning carries a message, such as “I want to feel God’s love” or “I desire to reconnect with my True Self.” 4. N—Nurture Offer kindness to yourself and to the longing. Imagine God’s love pouring into the ache, soothing and filling it. Remind yourself, “This longing is holy. It’s leading me closer to God.” Embracing the Longing as a GiftOur yearning for God is not a weakness or a flaw. It’s a sacred compass guiding us toward our Authentic Selves and the Divine Presence within us. When I stopped resisting my ache and instead embraced it as a gift, it became a doorway to a deeper relationship with God. Each time the longing rises within me, I now see it as a gentle nudge from the Creator, reminding me to rest in abiding love. Perhaps your longing is calling you too. Can you recognize it, allow it, investigate its message, and nurture it with compassion? In doing so, you may discover that your yearning isn’t something to overcome but an inner pathway to your deepest union with God. Here’s to holy longing. Here’s to being homesick for God. —brian j plachta brianplachta.com Music: A Spiritual Practice for Your Toolbox Have you ever felt God’s voice gently reach you through music?
