If Your Life Were a Book, What Would God Call It?

Posted On April 10, 2026

The other evening, I was sitting in my den, gazing out the window at spring blossoms dancing in the breeze. Nothing dramatic. A simple, peaceful moment.

In the quiet, I did what I often do—waiting, listening, making room for God to meet me. I wasn’t searching for anything specific. I wanted to be still long enough to notice what might rise from beyond the noise of the day.

Under my breath, I whispered, “Speak, Lord. I’m listening.”

And then, from somewhere deeper than my usual thoughts, this question rose:

“God, if my life were a book, what title would You give it?”

I didn’t answer the question. I just sat with it.

After a while, God’s answer came—not loud or dramatic, but gentle, like a gift being placed in my heart: Becoming the Beloved He Already Was.

I let those words rest in me for a while.

At first, they sounded like a contradiction. Becoming… what I already was?

But the longer I sat with them, the more they began to name something true. Not just about me, but maybe about all of us.

Maybe life is not so much about becoming someone new. Maybe it’s more about awakening to who we’ve been all along.

The False Self

Somewhere along life’s path, most of us believe other stories about who we are.

We learn to strive.
To prove.
To perform.
To protect.

We pick up false layers of personality and identities never meant to define us. Over time, we forget the deeper truth resting underneath it all: that we are already loved, already held, already enough.

The Awakening

But at some point, those false layers begin to wear thin. The roles we’ve played and the identities we’ve clung to no longer fit.

And somewhere beneath the striving and protecting, deeper questions rise —questions that invite us back to the truth of who we are. Questions like, “If my life were a book, what would God call it?”

And what matters most is this: if God is love, then the title God gives the book of our lives will always come from love.

Not shame.
Not accusation.
Not the voice of the false self.
Not the inner critic that tells us we are failing, falling behind, or not enough.

God speaks in the voice of love.

So whatever title God gives our lives will not condemn us. It will not diminish us. It will not reflect fear, ego, or false identity. It will name what is most true in us, what is most loved in us, what is most real in us.

That’s why a question like this can be so healing. It invites us to stop listening to the lesser voices and see ourselves through the eyes of divine love.

The Sacred Inner Journey

The spiritual journey becomes a returning, an awakening, a slow peeling back of the false self—one layer falling away at a time.

It’s not always easy. It’s not always comfortable. But it is sacred.

Because with each layer that falls away, we don’t become more impressive. We become freer. More grounded. More rooted in the quiet reality that, at our core, we are the Beloved.

Maybe that’s the deeper invitation hidden inside a question like this.

Not just, “What would God title my life?”
But, “Which voice have I been letting define my life’s story?”

Is it the voice of striving? The voice of proving? The voice that says, “I have to hold it all together to be worthy?”

Or is it the voice of surrender, of listening, of trusting that love is already here, already present, already alive within us?

The title God offered me—Becoming the Beloved He Already Was—felt like an invitation to go deeper into my True Self, into the inner journey of becoming who I already am in God.

Maybe God’s title for your life wouldn’t sound exactly like mine.

But underneath the words, the movement may be much the same: we are awakening.

Awakening to a love that was never absent.
Awakening to a presence that has always been with us.
Awakening to the Self we never had to manufacture, only uncover.

The Beloved we already are.

A Question to Ponder

Consider taking this question into your own quiet time:
“If my life were a book, what title would God give it?”

And as you sit with that question, remember: the God of love speaks with love. So listen not for the voice of fear or the false self, but for the voice of love and affirmation.

Don’t rush to answer.
Just listen.
Let the question rest gently in your heart.
And notice what rises.

You may discover the words you hear are not telling you who you need to become.

They’re revealing who you’ve been all along.

Your friend in the flow,

brian

P.S. A little spoiler alert: I’ll share more of this spiritual journey—both my own and that of many others—in my new book, Divine Flow: Reclaiming the Lost Art of Contemplation for Everyday Life, coming this June. Stay tuned.

Following the Breadcrumbs God Leaves Along Our Path

What if God is speaking through ordinary moments more often than we realize?

A conversation that stays with us. A door that closes. A quiet nudge we can’t quite explain. An unexpected invitation that seems to come at just the right time.

The challenge is learning to notice these moments before we have any idea where they’re leading, and trusting the next step.

Over time, we may begin to see that God’s guidance doesn’t always come as an answer. Sometimes, it comes as a trail.

What to Do When God Seems Silent

Has silence ever made you feel like God is far away? When we feel this way, it’s easy to start looking for answers or waiting for a clear sign. But prayer can also be as simple as slowing down and noticing what’s already here. The breeze. The waves. Your breath. The quiet. God’s presence doesn’t always come through words. Sometimes we just need to be still enough to notice.

Let God Alone Define You

Ever have someone’s words get stuck in your head?
Maybe they criticized you, misunderstood you, or told a story about you that doesn’t feel true. And before long, you’re holding a courtroom in your mind—defending yourself, replaying the conversation, wondering if maybe they’re right.

There’s another way.

Bring it into the quiet with God.

Ask: Is there something here I need to learn? Is there something I need to own? And what was never mine to carry in the first place?

We can stay humble enough to receive the truth without letting someone else’s opinion become our identity.

Because in the end, God alone defines you.
