God’s loving hand scatters breadcrumbs along our life’s path—small, often ordinary moments, encounters, nudges, closed doors, and unexpected openings that help us discern where Love may be leading us.
A word that stays with us.
A conversation we can’t forget.
A nudge we can’t quite explain.
A door that closes.
Another that unexpectedly opens.
They’re not always obvious.
Not always neat.
Sometimes they’re hidden beneath the choices we wish we hadn’t made, roads we thought were right until they weren’t.

Still, the breadcrumbs remain.
Maybe that’s what contemplative discernment becomes after years of deeper listening.
Not certainty.
Not perfection.
Not some mystical power that makes us better than anyone else.
Just an open heart that has learned, little by little, to recognize the sound of Love.
We practice daily quiet.
We listen beneath the chatter.
We notice which voices tighten us and which voice sets us free.

And eventually, we receive the gift of discernment—the ability to recognize the breadcrumbs scattered along our life’s path.
Even our mistakes become part of the trail.
We follow something that wasn’t meant for us.
We choose poorly.
We wander into places where peace disappears.
But God doesn’t waste the journey.
Wisdom rises from the experience.
Humility grows.

God patiently loosens our grip on the false selves we collected along the way—
the need to impress,
the need to control,
the need to be right,
the need to know exactly where the trail is going.
Until all that remains is the willingness to listen.
And then something mysterious happens.
The listening begins to shape the way we live.
We become, in our own quiet way, sidewalk prophets—ordinary people who listen for God’s wisdom, live authentically from what we hear, and use our gifts to help others find their way along their path.

We pray for wisdom.
We listen deeply.
We try to live authentically from what we hear in the silence of our hearts.
We take contemplation to the streets.
Not as experts who have arrived, but as pilgrims who’ve learned how to notice the breadcrumbs.
Maybe heaven isn’t only the place waiting for us at the end of the trail.
Maybe heaven keeps appearing crumb by crumb, moment by moment, as we recognize the voice of Love and choose to follow it, letting Love become our teacher and guide.
Maybe contemplative discernment is this: learning to trust the breadcrumb trail God has been laying beneath our feet all along.

A Tool for Your Spiritual Toolbox: The Breadcrumb Examen
At the end of the day, take a few quiet minutes and look back over the path you’ve walked.
Don’t try to figure everything out.
Simply ask God:
Where were the breadcrumbs today?
Then practice four simple movements:
Notice. Slowly replay your day. What conversation stayed with you? What brought unexpected peace? What unsettled you? What door seemed to close or unexpectedly open?

Name. Choose one moment that seems worth paying attention to. You don’t have to decide what it means. Simply name it:
This may be a breadcrumb.
Test. Ask: Where does this seem to lead or invite me?
Toward greater love, freedom, compassion, truth, humility, and peace?
Or toward fear, ego, control, resentment, or the need to prove myself?
Follow. Ask one final question: What is the next small, faithful step this breadcrumb might be inviting me to take?
Then take that step and let go of needing to know where the entire trail leads.

You might keep a small “breadcrumb journal,” writing down one breadcrumb each day.
Over time, patterns may begin to emerge.
A closed or open door.
An unexpected invitation.
A recurring desire.
A person who keeps appearing.
A growing sense of peace.
And maybe crumb by crumb, you’ll discover that God has been guiding you all along.
