Why do I feel so useless if I sit and do nothing, when perhaps it’s the most useful thing I can do?

Yet it is not a doing.

It is a Being—a Being present to my senses, to my Soul, to the Presence of God in all creation.

My dog knows how to do nothing. She can sit and do nothing for hours. She gazes peacefully resting her head on a blanket.

She seems content with doing nothing.

She is perhaps the most contemplative Spirit I’ve ever met.

I lift my eyes to heaven and pray for the grace to be still.

Father God, help me be more like my dog.
Help me be content doing nothing.
Help me be present to my senses, to my Soul, to your Divine Presence within and around me.
Help me sit in the quiet, Be Still, and know you are here in the silence of this moment.
Here in the stillness that grounds me in You.
Let this stillness remind me, I live in the Heart of God.
Help me understand beyond knowing that Being in this moment fully present to You is the most useless useful thing I can do and Be.

Amen.

When Meditation Isn’t Working

There are mornings when the hardest thing isn’t getting started…it’s staying.
Staying with your thoughts. Staying in the quiet. Staying when nothing is resolving, shifting, or making sense.
This poem came out of one of those mornings. When everything in me wanted to run, but I stayed. And God met me there.

God Is Gravity
